What is the sport of Scent Detection?
The development of this sport was inspired by the work of detection dogs searching for things such as termites and explosives. Instead of searching for such dangerous (or icky) substances, in the sport of Scent Detection dogs search for a tiny amount of designated essential oils.
The dogs learn to complete a container search (identifying the scented container from other identical containers), an interior search (locating the scent hidden somewhere in the room) and an exterior/vehicle search (locating the scent hidden outside or on a vehicle).
Participating in Scent Detection can be a great way to build a dog's confidence as they learn to lead the search and indicate where the scent is. It challenges a dog's problem solving skills as they search to locate the scent providing a great mental workout. Scent Detection training also promotes teamwork between dog and person as they work together to solve the scent puzzles.
Training in the sport of Scent Detection can be done just for fun or if people are interested, there are organizations offering competitions and titles. The main organization of this sport in Ontario has been the Sporting Detection Dog Association, although the Canadian Kennel club has started offering events in 2019. The benefits of training in Scent Detection occur while training, making competition something optional that people may or may not choose to pursue.
